WHAT TO SEE in BASEL?

10 THINGS TO SEE in BASEL

Basel Town Hall / Rathaus

Impossible not to notice the impressive red and gold Town Hall (the Rathaus) in Basel, which has become one of the most important places to see. In perfect Renaissance style and with a large and beautiful clock on the facade, it is currently used as the meeting place of the Cantonal Parliament and Government. Step inside to see astonishing paintings and sculptures.

Altstadt Grossbasel

The historic center of Basel is truly spectacular, thanks to the cobbled streets surrounded by picturesque old houses, think that it is one of the best preserved and most beautiful in Europe. A must is a walk through Andreasplatz square and the Martinsgasse, Augustinergasse, Imberggässlein, Nadelberg, Spalenberg, Gemsberg streets, where you can meet a lot of boutiques, souvenir shops, art galleries or relax with a good local craft beer.

Altstadt Kleinbasel

In the new part of town across the Rhine, Kleinbasel is Basel's hip district par excellence, with plenty of hip spots.

Rheinweg

The Rhine River separates the old town from the new part of the city. But it is also the beating heart of the city, in fact in the summer it is very common to see how the locals come to have a drink on the shore and swim or glide along the current of the river. To cross it you can also use one of the four original ferries, with boats that are held by a rope and propelled by the current of the river.

Tinguely Fountain

This is one of the most special places in Basel, it is a pool of water with moving iron figures. By the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely it was built on the site of the stage of the old theater in Basel and for this reason, to maintain the spirit of the theater, the author designed a system that moves the iron figures thanks to the force of the jets of water.

Mittlere Brucke

Opened in 1226 and rebuilt in 1905 to allow the passage of the tram, it is the most beautiful bridge in Basel. From this bridge, one of the oldest across the Rhine, you have a fantastic view of the houses on the river bank and the towers of the cathedral.

Spalentor

The most important gate of the old walls that surrounded the medieval city. It is a huge door located in a square tower, decorated with three religious sculptures from the 15th century, used above all to monitor the transport of goods from Alsace.

Basel Museums

Basel is one of the most important cultural cities in Europe thanks to its 40 museums. Among the most famous ones we find the Art Museum or Kunstmuseum, which houses several works by Picasso. Other outstanding museums in the city are the Anatomical Museum, the Paper Museum, the Museum of Antiquities, the Toy Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Cultures. All you have to do is explore what inspires you the most!

Basel Cathedral / Basler Münster

The Basler Münster Cathedral, rebuilt in the late 14th century after an earthquake, is another of the most beautiful sights to see in Basel. With its red sandstone facade and its two towers over 60 meters high it is truly spectacular. Just think that here is the tomb of the humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam, icon of the Erasmus student exchange programme.

Offene Kirche Elisabethen

Dedicated to the patroness of charity, this 19th-century neo-Gothic building, with a 71-metre-high tower, was the first Protestant church built in the city after the Reformation.
