Altstadt / Historic Center of Freiburg
The first thing to do when you arrive in the town is to get lost in the pedestrian streets of the historic centre. A typical feature of this city are the small streams (Bächle) that run along the edges of the streets in the centre. If you visit Freiburg in the summer you will occasionally see people dipping their feet in these tiny waterways to cool off. Another distinctive feature of the city are the mosaics that adorn the exteriors of the shops depicting the activity of the place.
Freiburg Cathedral
Freiburg's Gothic-style Cathedral of Our Lady (Münster unserer lieben Frau) stands tall in the center of the city with its single tower. It is one of the few German churches that still has the original stained glass windows (which survived the war) created in medieval times.
Historisches Kaufhaus (Historic Department Store)
It stands out for its red facade overlooking the Cathedral square. Inaugurated in 1532 to be the board of directors of the market, inside there are several halls where prestigious events take place such as the Emperor's Hall (Kaisersaal), the Fireplace Hall (Kaminzimmer) and the Rococo Hall (Rokokosaal).
Martinstor (Martin Gate)
Only two towers remain of Freiburg's old medieval fortification, and the Martin Gate is the oldest. In the early 1900s, the tower door was too small for the passage of trams, so instead of demolishing it, it was raised from 22 to 60 meters and a larger door was added.
Rathausplatz
The town hall square is one of the busiest in Freiburg. During the Christmas period it becomes even more beautiful and magical thanks to the Christmas market. In the center of the square is the monument to Berthold Schwarz, the inventor of gunpowder.
Altes Rathaus & Neues Rathaus
The Old (Altes) and New (Neues) Town Halls are located next to each other. The former was purchased at the beginning of the 14th century by the Freiburg government to transform it into the town hall. The facade is in red sandstone and the window frames are in black gold. Today it is the seat of the tourist office. The Neues Rathaus, on the other hand, is the building where the new town hall is currently located.
Schwabentor (Swabian Gate)
The second of the two remaining gates (and the most recent) of the medieval boundary wall. Also in this case at the beginning of the twentieth century the height of the door was doubled and a painting of a dragon slayer was added. Since 1969 it has housed a museum where the history of the region is told.
Schlossberg
Just outside the historic center is the Schlossberg, a mountain at an altitude of 456 meters from which to admire Freiburg from above in all its beauty and the Black Forest. From the public gardens (Statdtgarten) just take the funicular which takes you to the top of the mountain in a few minutes. Alternatively, you can reach the top with a nice walk starting from the Schwabentor. At the top you can admire Kanonenplatz (Cannon Square) and go to the Ludwigshöhe viewpoint. If you want to go higher you can climb the Salzbüchsle tower.
Blaue Brücke
When the bridge was opened in 1866, it was renamed Emperor William Bridge. However, the locals didn't like the name and still refer to it as the Blue Bridge (Blaue Brücke).
Church of the Heart of Jesus
In 1897 this church was built in the late Romanesque style so as not to compete with the Cathedral.

The tiny Freiburg Canals, known in German as Bächle, criss-cross the streets of the historic centre. With their 15.5 km length they supplied drinking water to the city. Since 1544 they have been kept clean and anyone who "contaminates" them is fined. In fact, this is the sunniest city in Germany and in the summer the canals are a great help. A curiosity, think that among the locals it is said that the person who falls into a canal will marry someone from Freiburg.
Among the districts of Fribourg, the Vauban district is certainly the most alternative and green one. Located in the southern part of the city, it stands on a former military settlement purchased in the 1990s by the Municipality of Freiburg to redevelop it. Today it is an excellent model of a sustainable and avant-garde neighborhood. An example are the so-called passive houses or Energy Plus, or houses that produce more clean energy than they need.

Freiburg Museums
City History Museum - Learn about the life of local Breisgau artist Johann Christian Wentzinger in the 18th century. The late Baroque rooms (of his former home) display Wentzinger's artwork and the history of Freiburg from its founding to modern times.
Augustinermuseum - The former Augustinian hermit monastery is today one of the largest museums in southern Germany. Its collection consists of works by German painters, tapestries, stained glass, furniture and other objects documenting medieval symbolism and faith.
Archaeological Museum Colombischlössle - The Villa Colombischlössle houses the Archaeological Museum of Freiburg with exhibits ranging from Roman times to the Middle Ages.
