5 THINGS TO SEE in LOCOROTONDO
Old Town of Locorotondo & Cummerse
Locorotondo is the "round village", precisely because of its circular shape, whose beauty has led it to be included in the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy and awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club. Its suggestive and characteristic alleys (called "stradelle"), which can be easily traveled on foot, are dotted with flowered balconies and embellished with lace curtains. Another peculiarity of the village are its "cummerse", the typical houses with sloping roofs which are covered with limestone slabs called chiancarelle.
Belvedere or "Lungomare" di Locorotondo
The village is also famous for its fabulous belvedere. At just over 400 meters high, it is considered the most beautiful terrace overlooking the Valle d'Itria from which to admire a breathtaking panorama made up of vineyards, dry-stone walls and olive groves that surround the typical trulli and ancient farms.
Mother Church of San Giorgio
Built where two other churches once stood, it stands out in the historic center for its imposing structure. If from the outside the sixteenth-century style façade will strike you, inside it is possible to admire a Baroque style mixed with Renaissance, with a marble altar from 1764.
St. Nicholas Church
Built in 1660, inside you can find frescoes of great artistic interest, depicting the life and miracles of San Nicola di Mira.
Morelli Palace
A splendid example of civil architecture that somewhat recalls the style adopted in nearby Martina Franca. This 1819 building has a large decorated portal, as well as balconies and wrought iron railings, typical of the Baroque buildings of southern Puglia.
