Cathedral of Parma
Located in Piazza del Duomo, the Romanesque cathedral has become the symbol of the city. Inside it is possible to admire the Assumption of the Virgin by Antonio Correggio, so realistic that it seems to come to life.
Baptistery
Another symbol of the city is the Baptistery, next to the Cathedral. This octagonal pink marble building was designed by Antelami, who decided to combine Romanesque and Gothic in the same work.
Giuseppe Garibaldi Square
Built on what was once the ancient Roman forum, this spectacular piazza is the hub of life in Parma. It is surrounded by important structures such as the monumental Palazzo del Governatore, the Municipality of Parma and the Church of San Paolo Apostolo. In front of the Governor's Palace is a bronze statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi. Here you will find lots of shops, restaurants and bars.
Pilotta Palace
A unique monumental complex and a sumptuous symbol of the ducal power of the Farnese family. Many architects have worked on its various buildings throughout history. Today inside there are the National Gallery, the National Archaeological Museum, the Palatine Library and the Farnese Theater, one of the symbols of the city and another of the unmissable places to visit in Parma.
Farnese Theater
When we talk about Parma, we cannot fail to refer to the majestic Farnese Theater. With a capacity of over four thousand people, it is one of the largest theaters in all of Italy. It is located inside the Palazzo della Pilotta and was built in the Baroque style. After the destruction during the Second World War, the theater was rebuilt and today it has regained its former glory.
Ducal Palace
Also known as the Palazzo del Giardino, the Palazzo Ducale was a project promoted by the Farnese family who wanted to create an elegant and tasteful residence worthy of representing them. Built around an ancient castle belonging to the Sforza era, today it is worth a visit.
Monastic Complex of San Giovanni Evangelista
Three spaces create this monastic complex: the church, the convent and the old pharmacy of San Giovanni. The spectacular dome of the church, with stupendous frescoes by Correggio, is the highlight. Also take a trip to the three cloisters of the Benedictine monastery, a perfect place for your photos.
Royal Theatre
Another theater of excellence in the city. Built in the 19th century by the will of the Duchess Maria Luisa of Austria. It is here that a festival dedicated to Giuseppe Verdi is celebrated every year.
Museum of Glauco Lombardi
In the heart of Parma, inside the Palazzo di Riserva we find the Museum of Glauco Lombardi, a permanent exhibition where you can admire a curious collection of historical ornaments and clothing from the 19th century.
Museum of Parmigiano Reggiano
Obviously, the museum of one of the culinary symbols of Parma could not be missing: Parmigiano Reggiano. Just outside the city, in Soragna, is the Museum of this cheese (which we adore, especially Simone), a paradise for product lovers. Located in an old 18th century farm owned by the princely Meli-Lupi family, here you can learn everything about the famous cheese.
