Church of Santa Maria Maggiore
The village of Spello is a small jewel perched on the slope of Mount Subasio. Its stone houses, cobbled streets and the marvelous works preserved in the churches and palaces make it the perfect destination for a journey dedicated to the history of art and culture. The church of Santa Maria Maggiore is interesting from this point of view. A gem for enthusiasts: if you want to know what Pinturicchio looked like (the church is famous precisely for the frescoes by this painter) just look at the small window with the painted grate on the right side of the Annunciation (wall on the left): under the shelf there is the painter's self-portrait.
Doors of Spello
The walls of Spello are among the best preserved in Italy. Among the various doors that open in the walls, three are the best known and most beautiful to see. Porta Consolare, with 3 entrances and a tower. Porta Venere with the Towers of Propezio (our favourite), which was the main gateway to the city. And finally Porta Urbica to which some legends are linked. The most famous (and for us the funniest) is probably the one linked to the paladin Orlando and the "singular" signs on the right wall of the Gate from which elements attributable to his prowess could be deduced. The interpretations of these signs are discordant: for some, the hollow in the wall would have been produced by the knight in the act of peeing, for others, however, it would indicate the height of his knee.
St Andrew's Church
Of thirteenth-century origin, the Franciscan church can be very interesting for art history lovers (like Marco). the main work is certainly the altarpiece with the Madonna and child painted by Pinturicchio.
Municipal Art Gallery of Spello
It is housed in the sixteenth-century Palazzo dei Canonici and houses paintings, goldsmith's works, sculptures and frescoes. If you are a fan of the genre, with a modest price you can admire beautiful historical-artistic works.
Tega Chapel
This little chapel is a little gem nestled in the historic center of the city and is beautifully decorated with 15th century frescoes. For a long time the chapel was the workshop of a tailor who in 1921 discovered the precious wall paintings that had been covered by plaster until then. The restorations have brought to light a series of truly beautiful representations. We will never get tired of saying it, if you are an art lover Spello is perfect for a weekend to discover the local history and culture.

TRAVEL TIPS about SPELLO by World Mappers
The thing that immediately struck us about this splendid village is the presence of many balconies and alleys beautifully decorated with lots of flowers and plants. This tradition reaches its climax with the Infiorata di Spello, an event held every year on the occasion of the Corpus Domini festivity, or rather on the ninth Sunday after Easter. In these days the city is filled with carpets and paintings along the streets made entirely with flowers, a marvel for the eyes. In June and July, then, the whole village enters the competition for the Finestre, Balconi e Vicoli fioriti (lit. "Windows, Balconies and Flowery Alleys") event in which the inhabitants challenge each other to embellish balconies, alleys and corners of Spello with flowers.
A 15-minute drive from Spello there are several wonderful places such as the villages of Bevagna and Montefalco.
The Fonti del Clitunno, in the municipality of Campello sul Clitunno, are worth a visit, unfortunately unknown to most tourists. An oasis of peace and tranquility surrounded by greenery which in our opinion is worth a visit. If you are in the area around lunchtime, don't miss the nearby restaurant to taste some excellent products of the Umbrian cuisine.
