Petite France
La Petite France, located on the Grande Île (the island of Strasbourg on the waters of the Ill River), is our favorite neighborhood and one of the most picturesque places to visit in Strasbourg. Stroll through its cobbled streets, see the characteristic half-timbered houses reflected in the water, sip a coffee sitting on one of its terraces with a view, take a boat trip on the canals are just some of the best things to do in this old fishing neighborhood that we are sure you will love madly. Among all the typical Alsatian houses of Petite France, the Maison des Tanneurs stands out, an old tanners' house converted into a restaurant, absolutely not to be missed.
Notre Dame Cathedral
A 10-minute walk from the Petite France is another of Strasbourg's iconic buildings, the Cathédrale de Notre Dame. Thanks to the 142 meters high bell tower, this church, built between 1015 and 1439, was the tallest building in the world for more than two centuries. In addition to climbing the bell tower to admire Strasbourg from above (you will have to climb 332 steps), we recommend that you visit the interior to see the pulpit, the organ and above all the beautiful astronomical clock (the perfect time to see it is at 12.30 when the twelve Apostles pass before Christ to be blessed).
Kammerzellhaus
The Kammerzell house, located at 16 Place de la Cathédrale, is the best preserved and most beautiful medieval building to see in Strasbourg. Today a hotel and restaurant, it was built in 1427 in the Gothic style and is striking for its dark tones, numerous windows surrounded by sculptures and the typical timber-framed decorations.
Ponts Couverts and the Vauban Dam
The Ponts Couverts are a group of three bridges and four defensive towers, which mark the entrance to the La Petite France district. These bridges were built between 1230 and 1250 over the River Ill, a tributary of the Rhine, as a defense against enemy attacks and were covered with wooden roofs, hence the name. A few meters from these bridges is the Vauban dam, whose purpose was defensive since it raised the level of the river in the event of an attack and made it difficult for the enemy to advance by flooding the surrounding countryside. Don't forget to go up to the terrace of the dam to enjoy the view towards the Ponts Couverts and the La Petite France district.
Kléber Square
Located in the commercial area, it is the main and largest square to visit in Strasbourg, with the statue of General Kléber, who was born in the city, and the Aubette palace. Another of the most famous squares in the city is Gutenberg square, which owes its name to Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the modern printing press. To reach these two squares, take Rue du Vieux Marché Aux Poissons, one of the busiest in the city, full of shops and restaurants. In December, two of the best Christmas markets in the city are set up in these two squares, while the Rue du Vieux Marché Aux Poissons is decorated with the famous illuminated sign of "Strasbourg, Capitale de Noel".
European Quarter
It is in the so-called European quarter that the headquarters of various European Union institutions such as the European Parliament, the Council of Europe or the European Court of Human Rights are concentrated.
German Quarter
Also known as the Imperial Quarter, another must-see in Strasbourg, it is the result of the expansion of the city carried out by the German authorities during its annexation between 1880 and the First World War. Germany wanted to make Strasbourg important within its empire and built a new city full of monumental buildings, north of the old town. Among these are the National and University Library of Strasbourg, the Palais du Rhin, the Palais Universitaire and the train station.
Rohan Palace
Close to Strasbourg Cathedral, this classical-style building was built between 1732 and 1742. Today, the Palace houses 3 museums: the Museum of Decorative Arts, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Archaeological Museum.
Church of Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune
The Protestant church of Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune, dating from 1031, is one of the most interesting buildings to visit in Strasbourg. Inside the Gothic-style church you can admire 14th-century frescoes, the 11th-century columned cloister and the remains of an old 7th-century church currently used as a crypt.
Parc de l'Orangerie
Next to the European institutions, there is the Parc de l'Orangerie, the largest and oldest park in Strasbourg. In addition to being able to walk, go by boat or relax here you will also find a small free zoo. In the middle of the park is the Joséphine building, built in 1804 to house the 140 orange trees from the Château de Bouxwiller. One of the most beautiful parks to see in Strasbourg!

Historic Cellar of the Strasbourg Hospital - This 14th century cellar houses the oldest wine in the world kept in barrels. If it is true that wine gets better with time, then some of the best wines in the world are hidden in the cellars of the civil Hôpital in Strasbourg. In the cellar under the hospital, built in 1395, there is a wine barrel dated 1472, believed to be the oldest in the world. Some Alsatian winemakers are allowed to mature their wines in these legendary cellars. Around 150,000 bottles of wine are produced here each year and are considered to be among the best in the world. Renovated in 1994, the cellar now also houses a wine museum which includes the 1472 wine.
Dine in a "Stable" - A beautiful example of a mix between historical heritage and contemporary design. The hotel and restaurant Les Haras de Strasbourg are worth a visit. An 18th century building built to house the royal stables, now restored and converted respecting the original site.
Gargoyle & Ancient Graffiti of Strasbourg Cathedral - The Cathedrale de Strasbourg is considered a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Among its many striking features are the very rich decoration of the facade and the Gargoyles. If you look closely, some of these look evil or unusual for a church, like a donkey or a monkey. The Cathedral was also the tallest building in the world from about 1647 to 1874. As such it has attracted a great many visitors over the centuries. People who, in addition to admiring the building, have left their mark. Going up to the panoramic terrace you can see their names, initials and the year of their visit carved into it. Some of these even date back to the 1600s.
Musée Voodoo - Did you ever think that the largest private collection of voodoo and West African objects is located in Strasbourg? It sounds strange but that's how it is. The Château Vodou museum, a former water tower, houses fascinating and disturbing objects of cult, divination and witchcraft.
Ice Factory - The building now occupied by the exclusive Régent Petite France hotel was once a state-of-the-art refrigeration plant. Several rooms and machines have been preserved as part of the hotel development project and were registered in 1991 on the list of historic monuments of Strasbourg.
