LGBT TROMSØ

Norway was among the first countries in the world to recognize equal rights for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation. There is a generous attitude towards sexuality and gender identity and this country was among the first to enact anti-discrimination laws against gays and lesbians. Precisely for this reason it is ranked fourth among 49 European countries in the annual Rainbow Europe Map 2022 ranking by ILGA-Europe (International Lesbian and Gay Association). Nowadays homosexual couples have the same rights as heterosexual couples, among which church marriage, adoption and assisted fertilization emerge. Every year around November Pride Week takes place, a week of celebrations.

WHAT TO SEE in TROMSO?

10 THINGS TO SEE in TROMSO

Tromsø Old Town

It is so particular that we advise you to 'get lost' admiring the fantastic wooden houses, shops and rhythms.

Tromsø Cathedral and the Arctic Cathedral (Ishavskatedralen)

They should not be confused as Tromsø Cathedral, the northernmost Protestant church in the world, is located in the city center and is the only cathedral to have been built entirely of wood. The Arctic Cathedral, on the other hand, is much more modern and has a surprising structure and it will be impossible not to recognize it as it is always well lit.

Polaria

It is an aquarium-museum just a 15-minute walk from the city centre. Inside, in addition to hosting animals, it is also possible to find exhibitions dedicated to Svalbard (islands belonging to Norway). Its structure appears to represent chunks of ice that have separated from the Arctic.

Tromso Harbour

It is distinguished by huge colorful wooden buildings and spectacular views of the bridge and the Arctic Cathedral on the opposite bank.

The Polar Museum

It is one of the most particular museums in the city as inside it is possible to admire the exhibits on the polar expeditions and on the arctic science carried out by the explorers.

Bruvegen Bridge

An imposing bridge that marks the skyline of the town of Tromsø and which leads to the Arctic Cathedral.

Utsiktspunkt

It is the panoramic point that will allow you to have a splendid view of the historic center of the city.

Fjellheisen

It is the cable car that connects Tromsø to the top of Mount Storsteinen. On the way you will pass the city, the islands, the fjords and the very high peaks. It dates back to 1961 and is loved by both locals and tourists. The journey is very short and lasts four minutes and at the top you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the strait, the island of Tromsøya and the Tromsø bridge.

Public Library and Archive

It is located in the center and has four floors and was declared the best service company in the city in 2006. The peculiarity lies in the structure called 'candle shell', formed by four arched arches.

Troll Museum

It is the first museum in Norway completely dedicated to trolls and fairy tales and will immerse you in the culture of the Norwegians.

TRAVEL TIPS about TROMSO by World Mappers

  • Getting to Tromsø there are no direct flights from Italy but you can take a plane to Oslo and then take another internal flight to Tromsø.

  • The public transport network is very valid, in fact the buses offer a dynamic and always very punctual service.

  • An experience that we recommend is undoubtedly having dinner in a Sami tent to taste the typical products and admire the reindeer up close.

  • One thing not to be avoided is undoubtedly the excursion with the sled pulled by husky dogs, it is one of the most beautiful experiences we have ever had!

  • In winter, the experience of sleeping in an igloo at the Tromsø Ice Domes is not to be missed, one of the best hotels in all of Norway from which to admire the northern lights. Each building, the ice bar, ice cinema, ice chambers and ice restaurant, are all designed with Sami culture and northern lights themes.

  • Another experience not to be missed is the Magic Ice Bar Tromso, a wonderful winter wonderland built with several tons of natural ice from Norway. The ice bar and art gallery are the work of world famous ice carvers!

  • How to get to the North Cape from Tromsø? Don't worry, we'll help you! Keep in mind that they are about 500 km apart. One of the means to reach it, in winter, is by convoy (a snowplow that opens the road) but it will take about 8 hours and it is not always a safe means given the temperatures. A more convenient and more reliable method is to take a flight from Tromsø to Alta and then the number 62 bus to reach the North Cape. In all it will take about 7 hours.

  • How to get to Andenes from Tromsø? It is possible to do it directly and just take a plane with the company 'Widerøe' and in just 30 minutes you will reach your destination, but unfortunately this is the most expensive solution. In summer there is also the possibility of getting there by car, using the ferry that connects Gryllefjord to Andenes.

  • Near Tromsø, not to be missed is the Island of Senja, inhabited by about 7,800 people and connected to the mainland by the Gisund bridge, it is the second largest island in Norway and competes with Lofoten for the beauty of its landscapes. Must sees: the small town of Husøy, a beautiful islet located in the øyfjord and connected to Senja by a short causeway, home to around 300 people making it Senja's most active fishing community, Tungenes, a beach with a breathtaking view of a range of pointed mountains, the Bergsbotn utsiktsplattform, a viewing platform where you can make a short stop, and Gryllefjord, a really nice village where you can find a supermarket with a petrol pump, the library, a “kafé ”, a church and a second-hand shop.
