WHAT TO SEE in VERONA?

10 THINGS TO SEE in VERONA

Piazza Bra & Arena of Verona

Starting from Porta Nuova and following a wide tree-lined road, you will reach the spectacular Piazza Bra. It goes without saying that the symbol of the square is the Arena, an ancient Roman amphitheater now used for open-air shows and concerts for thousands of spectators. If you have enough time, treat yourself to an evening here, perhaps watching one of the many operas staged during the summer months. Spectacular scenery and a magical atmosphere will not disappoint you (We go there at least once every summer). Or, simply sit in one of the many bars overlooking the square and the Arena and enjoy a good Venetian Spritz in total relaxation.

Via Mazzini

Here we are in the long, narrow street that connects the two main squares of Verona, Piazza Bra and Pizza delle Erbe. It is one of the oldest and most evocative pedestrian streets in Europe and the Veronese shopping street par excellence, famous for its big names.

Piazza delle Erbe, Palazzo della Regione & Torre dei Lamberti

Piazza delle Erbe, the oldest square in Verona built above the ancient area of the Roman Forum. A lively and colorful market is held here every morning where you will find fresh fruit and vegetables and many souvenirs. Between Piazza Erbe and Piazza dei Signori is the Palazzo della Regione, also known as the Mayor's Palace, for centuries the center of political power. Next to it you can see the medieval Torre dei Lamberti, the highest in Verona, from which you can enjoy a magnificent view over the city (admission is subject to a fee).

Piazza dei Signori, Scaliger Arches & Monument to Dante

Piazza dei Signori is right next to Piazza delle Erbe, divided by the Arco de la Costa. However, this square differs in a more aristocratic and elegant style. Next to it you will find the Archi Scaligeri, one of the most evocative places in Verona. It is a small, monumental and scenic private cemetery, where the first lords of the city, the Scaligeri, are buried. The architecture is simply beautiful, but be careful as the site can only be viewed from the outside as the tombs are divided from the square by a marble fence and an iron fence. In the center of the square stands the statue of the great Dante Alighieri. In fact, during his exile from Florence, the writer remained in Verona for a long time.

Juliet's House

According to tradition, Giuletta's family, the Capulets, lived in this house a few steps from Piazza delle Erbe. When we were there, the building was also sadly known for the entrance porch entirely covered in notes, chewing gum and writings of lovers. Now cleaned up, it is forbidden to smear the walls in any way. Crossing the portico you reach a precious courtyard where the statue of Juliet stands out. Touching her right breast is said to bring good luck. Behind Juliet you can also see the famous balcony. If you have time, the house can also be visited inside, with a reconstruction of antique furniture and period decorations.

Cathedral of Verona

Also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Matricolare, it is one of the most beautiful churches in the city, with a harmonious exterior that combines Romanesque and Gothic styles. The interior is equally majestic!

Ponte di Pietra (Stone Bridge)

The oldest bridge in the city of Verona; think that it dates back to the 1st century BC. Rebuilt several times over the centuries, it stands out for its imposing structure and the diversity of materials used for its construction.

Castelvecchio di Verona & Ponte Scaligero (Scaliger Bridge)

A large castle overlooking the banks of the Adige river with military architecture and 7 covered towers, now home to the Civic Museum of Verona. At the center of the castle is the Torre del Mastio from which the Scaliger fortified bridge with three arches develops, also known as Ponte di Castelvecchio, simply magnificent.

Basilica of Saint Zeno & Basilica of Saint Anastasia

Even if they are not close, we present them together. The Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore is considered one of the best examples of Romanesque style in Italy, characterized by a large rose window and a richly decorated portal on the facade. The Basilica of Santa Anastasia is instead the largest church in the city and the most important Gothic building. Inside you can admire spectacular works such as the fresco by Antonio Pisano (known as Pisanello).

Roman Theatre

A very atmospheric old theater with a wonderful view over the city. Every summer an interesting festival dedicated to Shakespeare takes place here, with the representation of his works. If you are fond of history and archeology do not miss the Archaeological Museum of Verona overlooking the Theater.

The Most BEAUTIFUL PANORAMIC POINTS of VERONA

Enjoy the city from above from the best viewpoints of Verona that we recommend:

San Pietro Hill

Easily accessible by car, funicular or via a staircase located right in front of Ponte Pietra. Together with the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes it is certainly one of the best panoramic points in Verona.

Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes

Located in the Torricelle area, on the hills surrounding the city and one of the most suggestive and fascinating spots that can be found here. You can get there by car, by bus or on foot.

Scaliger Bridge

A pleasant and romantic walk to admire the city and get lost in the colors of the sunset over Verona.

Castelvecchio Museum

A few steps from Piazza Brà and overlooking the banks of the Adige river. From the Armory room with a nice walk it is possible to access the ramparts of the castle, admiring a fantastic view of the city and its hills.

Lamberti Tower

From its 84 meters high, climbing a staircase or a glass elevator on foot, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the city and its red roofs.

"SECRET VERONA"

Unusual and Particular Places to See in Verona

Outside the classic places to visit of the city, there is a "Secret Verona" that has simply bewitched us. Here are the 4 Things and Places to See in Secret Verona:

  1. Giusti Farden - Welcome to a wonderful Renaissance garden. It is located in the eastern part of the city, within walking distance of the centre. We advise you to visit it in the late afternoon when there are less crowds and it is illuminated by the golden light of the sunset.

  2. Love Fountain - Did you think Romeo and Juliet was Verona's only love story? Well no! A 16th-century legend tells the story of a young soldier in love with a beautiful girl who, however, did not seem to reciprocate her feelings. On a cold winter day the girl challenged the man to see if the water at the bottom of a well was really as cold as her feelings. The young soldier blinded by love threw himself into the well and died. The girl, actually in love with the young man, felt so guilty that he decided to jump into the ice water too. According to the tragic story, the well of love would be the one in Vicolo San Marco in Foro, near Piazza Erbe.

  3. Sanctuary of Madonna della Corona - Just outside Verona, in the Monte Baldo area, we discovered a small marvel, a centuries-old chapel overlooking the valley below. It almost seems suspended in mid-air! The sanctuary can be reached by climbing some steps that starts from the village of Brentino in Vallagarina (about two hours of walking) or by crossing the road (walkable) that starts from the village of Spiazzi.

  4. Arch with Whalebone - This is the bizarre story of a whale rib mysteriously suspended in the Arco della Costa (near Piazza Erbe) since 1700. Nobody knows how it got there. Some believe it is a fossil found in the mountains near Verona, brought and displayed in the city as a sort of superstitious protection. According to others, however, it would be a "relic" from the Holy Land. Finally, still others believe that it is the sign of the ancient pharmacy that once stood in this area. Despite all these theories, the mystery about the origins of this strange bone in the heart of the city still remains

  • We could not fail to mention one of Simone's favorite places, Via Sottoriva, one of the most characteristic streets of Verona. The street is almost entirely covered by arcades which give it a truly unique charm. Initially born as a street of antique shops, it later became the hub of the city's nightlife. Due to the evening chaos, unfortunately today most of the clubs have closed, but magnificent taverns and delightful little restaurants have blossomed here and there. Without doubt our favorite is the Osteria Sottoriva, a place much loved by the Veronese.

TELEFONARE e NAVIGARE all'ESTERO

eSIM CARD

Basta scansionarlo e sarai subito connesso a Internet.
