WHAT TO SEE in WASHINGTON DC?

10 THINGS TO SEE in WASHINGTON DC

Capitol

One of Washington DC's most popular attractions. It stands on Capitol Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall, a boulevard filled with lawns, swimming pools and monuments. It is possible to visit some internal parts; we advise you to book in advance as day tickets are limited. If you weren't planning on visiting and changed your mind, try asking the Capitol Visitor Center if they have Same-day Tour Passes available for that day.

White House

The most famous house in the world. We have to tell the truth, on television it seemed bigger to us. We contented ourselves with seeing it from the outside (it seems that the procedure to follow to visit it inside is complicated if not completely impossible). The two facades of the building are visible: the south facade, the one best known to be clear, and the north facade to which you can get closer.

Lincoln Memorial

One of the symbolic monuments of the United States of America, a tribute to President Abraham Lincoln. Walk the length of the Mall until you reach the western end. Go up the steps of the "temple" and, before entering, turn around. Washington's most famous symbols are in front of your eyes, perfectly aligned with each other.

Washington Monument

The obelisk, in honor of the first president of the United States of America, which is majestically reflected in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial & Korean War Veterans Memorial

Placed to the left and right of the Reflecting Pool in memory of soldiers who died or went missing in the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Constitution Gardens

If you want a break these peaceful gardens could be for you. You can stroll along the banks of a pond in the company of squirrels. On the islet in the center stands a monument dedicated to the signatories of the constitution of the United States of America.

Library of Congress

Behind the Capitol is the largest library in the world. Some of the halls are truly magnificent.

US Holocaust Memorial Museum

If you have time, we recommend that you visit this memorial full of photographs and personal stories that provide a testimony to the sad history of the Holocaust.

Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum

The aviation and space exploration museum (the part we liked the most) with real specimens of spacecraft.

Georgetown

Washington's oldest neighborhood along the Potomac River and home to Georgetown University. The atmosphere you breathe is decidedly different from that of the monuments and buildings in the city centre. Indeed, it seemed to us that we were in another city.

TRAVEL TIPS about WASHINGTON DC by World Mappers

  • Is it possible to do just one day trip to Washington DC from New York? In our opinion yes! There are many connections between the two cities. For example, we traveled with Megabus, woke up early and in about four hours we were at our destination. If you decide to visit the city in a day, obviously you will have to make choices about what to see and what not. It will be difficult to be able to visit the Georgetown district or enter the museums but you can dedicate yourself to the must-sees or the Capitol, the monuments of the National Mall and the White House .. perhaps walking between one destination and another in the greenery that this city offers.

  • If you are short on time, in our opinion, a good alternative is offered by the Hop-On Hop-Off Buses. You go up and down as many times as you want, going around all the main places in the city. If you only have one day and don't want to travel miles, give it a try. Alternatively, take the subway. However, keep in mind that traveling underground you will miss out on some nice views of the city.

  • Could we visit a city without visiting a market? Of course not! We recommend the Eastern Market which is located in a historic building in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. A great stop for lunch or a snack. If you go during the weekend you will also find many handicraft stalls.
